A.B., et al. v. Google LLC, et al. is a children's privacy case in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California (case 5:23-cv-03101). The plaintiffs said Google and its AdMob advertising unit gathered personal information from children under 13 through advertising software built into Play Store apps, without the verifiable parental consent that COPPA requires.

Google and AdMob deny the claims but agreed to an $8.25 million settlement. Claims close September 14, 2026 and require no proof of download.

The allegations in plain terms

COPPA, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, says a company needs a parent's verifiable permission before collecting personal data from a child under 13. The complaint argues that ad SDKs embedded in third-party Play Store apps collected children's data for targeted advertising anyway.

The court has not ruled on whether that happened. The settlement ends the case without a finding either way.

Who is in the class

  • You were under 13 at some point between April 1, 2015 and the settlement date while using an app downloaded from Google Play.
  • Google or AdMob collected your personal information in connection with that use.
  • You are a U.S. resident.
  • Adults who were children during the class period file for themselves. Parents and legal guardians file on behalf of children who are still minors.

Current status

Final court approval is still pending. Claims are being accepted in the meantime, and late claims after September 14, 2026 will not be accepted. The administrator's current estimate is $40 to $200 per approved claim, a range that moves with the number of valid claims filed.

Filing through Kroll

Kroll Settlement Administration runs the claim portal. Go to coppaprivacyclassaction.com to review the class definition, then open the online form. You provide contact details and attest that you, or the child you are filing for, meet the definition. No purchase or download records are uploaded.

Once submitted, Kroll holds the claim until the court rules on final approval, then sends email updates on the payment timeline. Filing is free. Payout, a free discovery app, also lists this settlement, but you do not need it to file.
