Chantix contamination settlement with Pfizer, who is included and how to file

In re Chantix (Varenicline) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (No. II), case 22-MD-3050 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, gathered claims that Pfizer sold Chantix tablets contaminated with N-nitroso-varenicline, a compound classified as a probable human carcinogen. The FDA recalled all U.S. Chantix tablets in September 2021 after testing confirmed the contamination.
The plaintiffs alleged Pfizer knew about the defect, failed to warn, and kept selling. Pfizer denied wrongdoing but agreed to pay $44 million to resolve the economic-loss claims of purchasers and third-party payors such as insurers.
Preliminary approval came June 1, 2026. Claims close September 14, 2026, and no proof of purchase is required to submit.
What the MDL alleged
This is an economic-loss case, meaning the claim is that people paid for a drug they would not have bought had they known about the contamination. It is separate from any personal injury claims about cancer. The consumer pool is capped at 20 percent of the net fund, with the rest allocated to insurers and health plans that reimbursed Chantix prescriptions.
